What is Self-Advocacy?

Knowing what your needs are and developing the skills and confidence to ask for the support you need.

Why does it matter?

Students who receive special education support often struggle to transition from a highly structured environment, to navigating various situations independently – understanding their own needs, and advocating for or implementing the necessary support. Individuals who can communicate their needs are more successful in school and the workplace.

The student should be involved in the entire IEP process and receive explicit instruction about their own cognitive profile, life skills, and self-advocacy.
