What is Neurodiversity?

Acknowledging the differences in how human brains work, celebrating these differences, and operating from a strengths-based perspective.

  • The world is full of beautiful brains.

  • We each have our own unique ways of thinking and learning.

  • Brain differences are normal.

Why does it matter?

Disability classifications like ADHD and Learning Disability are an important part of understanding a student’s needs and obtaining special education services.

When we focus too much on these labels:

  • It can be stigmatizing.

  • It leads to low self esteem for students who become hyperaware of their challenges.

The disability label is one of many steps in understanding a student’s cognitive profile. It is key for students to shift to the lens of neurodiversity, to strengthen their confidence and self-knowledge, and to find greater success in school and life.

The goal is for each neurodivergent student to understand how their brain works and to build the skills which successfully lead to independence.
